The new space race isn’t happening in Houston or Kazakhstan—it’s unfolding in the far north. Andøya Spaceport in Norway and SaxaVord Spaceport in Scotland are now competing to become Europe’s premier gateway to orbit.

Andøya has already demonstrated operational readiness with Europe’s first mainland orbital launch attempt in 2025 and is set to host reusable rocket campaigns from Astrobotic starting in 2026, boosting its role as a cutting‑edge Arctic launch hub.

Meanwhile, SaxaVord is rapidly positioning itself as the UK’s first vertical‑launch site, attracting companies like Orbex and RFA—though not without environmental concerns that could influence its trajectory.

Together, these two northern spaceports are racing to define Europe’s future access to polar orbit—and the stakes have never been higher.
